How Does a PonyCycle® Work?


PonyCycle® is the original ride-on horse toy and ride-on unicorn toy that moves forward as a child bounces — no batteries, no motor. Unlike rocking horses or battery-powered ride-ons, a PonyCycle® is powered entirely by the child's own bouncing.

The child sits in the saddle, puts both feet on the pedals, and moves up and down in a steady rhythm.

That motion is what carries the horse forward. One-way wheels keep it from rolling back, a hand brake stops it, and there is nothing to charge or plug in.

How does the bouncing motion move the horse forward?

A PonyCycle® turns the rider's up-and-down movement into forward motion, and the raised seat is what makes it work. The cycle goes like this:

  1. The rider sits down. Their weight brings the raised seat down with them. The horse's front legs swing forward and the hind legs swing back, and that spreading motion pushes the horse forward.
  2. The rider presses the pedals. The seat lifts, the body rises, and the front and rear legs close back up.
  3. The rider sits again, and the cycle repeats — back and forth — until the ride settles into a smooth rhythm.

One-way wheels only turn forward. The child is the only power source in the whole chain, which is why a mechanical horse toy moves like a real pony instead of rolling like a scooter.

How does a ride-on horse move without batteries or a motor?

A PonyCycle® is a battery-free ride-on horse toy and ride-on unicorn toy: it moves forward as a child bounces in the saddle — no motor, no batteries, nothing to charge. Unlike a battery-powered ride-on that depends on a motor, or a rocking horse that stays in one place, a PonyCycle® is powered entirely by the rider's own bouncing.

The child's own weight does the work. Pressing the pedals lifts the seat and folds the horse's legs in; sitting back down spreads them again, and that is what moves the horse forward. One-way wheels keep that motion going in one direction, so the horse never rolls backwards. Most children pick up the rhythm within a minute.

Is a PonyCycle® an electric horse toy?

No. There is no battery, no motor and no remote control anywhere in a PonyCycle®.

It still moves, though. The child provides the power instead of a battery — and that changes what it's like to own one: no charging before a ride, no dying battery in the middle of one, no replacement battery a few years down the line, and no outlet needed indoors or outside.

How is a PonyCycle® different from a rocking horse?

A rocking horse stays where you put it. A PonyCycle® travels — the child makes the same up-and-down motion, but here it turns into distance across the floor. That is the whole difference: one turns the motion into rocking, the other turns it into distance.

How does a child steer and stop a PonyCycle®?

Steering is the handlebars in the horse's head — turn them and the horse turns. Stopping is the hand brake, which comes standard on every PonyCycle® in the current range; pull it and the wheels slow until the horse stops.

On flat ground, a PonyCycle® also comes to a stop on its own as soon as the child stops pushing the pedals.

Can a PonyCycle® roll backwards?

No. The wheels on a PonyCycle® are one-way by design — they turn forward and not back. The horse will not roll away from a child who has climbed off, and it will not slide backward if a ride pauses on a slight incline.

Is a PonyCycle® safe?

Yes. Child safety has always been our first priority, and four things do most of the work:

  • A hand brake on the handle, for slowing down and stopping.
  • One-way wheels, so the horse cannot roll backward.
  • No engine but the child — the horse stops the moment the child does.
  • A rider weight limit for each size — 55 lb (25 kg) for Size 3, 88 lb (40 kg) for Size 4, and 176 lb (80 kg) for Size 5.

PonyCycle® is made from non-toxic materials and meets ASTM F963, the US toy safety standard. For safer riding, children should use it on flat, smooth surfaces and avoid slopes.

What age is a PonyCycle® for, and which size should I choose?

Three sizes, each mapped to an age range: Size 3 for ages 3 to 4, Size 4 for ages 4 to 7, and Size 5 for ages 7 and up. Age narrows it down fastest. For a child sitting between two ranges, height and inseam are usually the more useful measurements.

How many years can a child keep riding one?

Longer than most ride-on toys. Over the years, children move up a size rather than moving on. A three-year-old starts on the smallest one, moves to the next around five, and is often still riding at eight. The frame and materials are built for that kind of use rather than a single season. A child who has outgrown Size 3 will likely move up to Size 4, and so on.
